The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is the most studied, most celebrated, and arguably the most emotionally powerful of all the world’s great apes. Dian Fossey spent eighteen years living alongside mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Virunga Massif, transforming scientific understanding of primate behaviour and sparking a conservation movement that has since brought the species back from the brink of extinction. Classification and Subspecies

Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei), one of two gorilla species — the other being the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), which inhabits the forests of Central and West Africa. Eastern gorillas are divided into two subspecies: the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) and the eastern lowland gorilla, also known as Grauer’s gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), which is found only in the DRC.

Mountain gorillas are found only in two geographically isolated populations: the Virunga Massif, a chain of eight volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. These two populations are separated by approximately 25 kilometres of farmland and have been genetically isolated from each other for centuries.

Physical Characteristics

Mountain gorillas are the largest of all living primates. Adult male silverbacks typically stand 1.6 to 1.7 metres tall when upright and weigh between 130 and 220 kilograms. Females are considerably smaller, typically weighing between 70 and 100 kilograms. Mountain gorillas are distinguished from their lowland relatives by several physical features that reflect adaptations to their high-altitude habitat: longer, thicker fur that provides insulation in the cold mountain environment; broader chests and more muscular builds; and longer hair on the face, giving them a shaggier appearance than lowland gorillas.

The silverback — the dominant adult male in any gorilla family — gets his name from the distinctive silver-grey saddle of hair that develops across his back from approximately twelve years of age. This silver saddle is unique to adult male gorillas and serves as a visual signal of reproductive maturity and social status. No two silverbacks have identical saddle patterns, allowing researchers to identify individual animals from photographs taken years apart.

Knuckle-Walking and Locomotion

Gorillas are primarily quadrupedal, moving on all four limbs using knuckle-walking, in which the weight of the forelimbs rests on the knuckles of the hands rather than the palms. This posture protects the palms from ground contact. Gorillas can stand and walk bipedally for short distances — typically during threat displays or when carrying food with both hands — but the energy cost is much higher than knuckle-walking.

Despite their bulk, gorillas are remarkably agile. Mountain gorillas climb trees to sleep in nests and to reach fruit, and juveniles are highly acrobatic. Adult male silverbacks rarely climb trees — their weight makes it impractical — but adult females and younger gorillas spend significant time in the canopy.

Diet and Feeding Behaviour

Mountain gorillas are primarily herbivorous, with a diet that consists mainly of leaves, stems, bark, roots, and fruit when seasonally available. Unlike chimpanzees, which are opportunistically omnivorous and regularly hunt other animals, gorillas have no known predatory behaviour and do not eat meat.

An adult silverback eats approximately 18 to 20 kilograms of vegetation per day. Key food plants in Bwindi include wild celery, thistles, nettles, bamboo shoots (particularly important in the Virunga population, which accesses bamboo zones seasonally), and the bark of several tree species. Gorillas obtain most of their water from the moisture content of the vegetation they eat, supplemented by direct water consumption from streams or rain-wet leaves.

Social Structure: The Gorilla Family

Mountain gorillas live in stable, multigenerational family groups ranging from two to more than fifty individuals, though groups of ten to twenty are most common. Each group is led by a dominant silverback, whose authority pervades every aspect of the group’s social life — he decides when to move, where to eat, when to rest, and how to respond to threats. The silverback’s dominance is maintained not primarily through aggression but through presence, relationship, and the accumulated trust of a lifetime of group leadership.

Most gorilla families include one dominant silverback, one or more subordinate adult males (blackbacks, aged eight to twelve years, and younger silverbacks who may be sons or brothers of the dominant male), several adult females, and their offspring of various ages.

Female Transfer and Group Formation

When female gorillas reach sexual maturity at approximately eight years of age, they typically leave their natal group and transfer to another group or to a solitary male. This dispersal behaviour prevents inbreeding and drives the genetic mixing that maintains population health. A silverback who successfully attracts multiple immigrant females builds a large, multi-female group — the most stable and reproductively successful form of gorilla social organisation.

Communication and Intelligence

Gorillas communicate through an extraordinarily rich repertoire of vocalisations, facial expressions, body postures, and tactile interactions. The full inventory of gorilla vocalisations documented by researchers includes more than twenty distinct calls, ranging from the deep, chest-beating display roar of a threatening silverback to the soft belch vocalisations that a contented family emits during peaceful feeding — a low, purring sound that communicates comfort and group cohesion.

The iconic chest-beat — a rapid drumming of alternating hands on the chest — is not primarily an act of aggression. It is a complex communication tool that conveys information about the performer’s size, health, and social status. Larger silverbacks produce lower-pitched chest-beat sounds, and research has shown that females actively choose mates based partly on chest-beat characteristics. The sound carries remarkably far through forest, reaching neighbouring groups and solitary males across distances of more than a kilometre.

Cognitive Abilities

Mountain gorillas demonstrate sophisticated cognitive abilities including tool use, problem-solving, memory, and what researchers describe as empathy. Gorillas in captivity have learned sign language vocabularies of several hundred signs and demonstrated an understanding of abstract concepts and novel combinations of language. While gorillas in their natural habitat do not use sign language, field researchers have documented numerous examples of flexible problem-solving, social learning, and long-term memory that confirm the cognitive sophistication that laboratory studies have demonstrated.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Female mountain gorillas reach sexual maturity between seven and ten years of age and typically give birth for the first time between ten and thirteen years. The gestation period is approximately 8.5 months — similar to humans. Gorillas almost always give birth to a single infant, with twins occurring extremely rarely. Newborn gorillas weigh approximately 1.8 kilograms and are born with notably sparse hair, limited motor control, and entirely dependent on their mothers for warmth, nutrition, and transport.

Infants are carried on their mothers’ backs from approximately four months, when they begin to develop the strength to grip independently. Nursing continues for three to four years, and the mother-infant bond remains close for much longer. The long period of maternal dependence reflects the slow maturation and extended learning period that characterises all great apes, whose behavioural repertoire is largely learned rather than innate.

Conservation Status

The mountain gorilla is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List — a status that represents a significant improvement from Critically Endangered, to which it was downlisted in 2018 following the census that revealed a population of more than 1,000 individuals for the first time in recorded history. Ongoing threats include habitat loss from agricultural expansion, disease transmission from humans and domestic livestock, political instability in the eastern DRC, and climate change altering the vegetation structure that mountain gorillas depend on.
